First of all... Happy (belated) Fourth! This is the second year we have attempted to take Corey to Lakewood Park and this is the second time we did not stay. Last year, it was rain; this year Cory’s cries of fright.
We got to the park just in time to say hellos to Leah, her girls, cousin Beth and some friends of Leah's who has a three year old, spread out the blanket and eat some graham crackers before the fireworks started. The lights in the park went out and Corey was okay. He was whimpering a little with the practice fireworks. The one or two they set off before they start the show. He tried to clap along with the other little boy, but it was not his natural good-hearted laugh. By the time the fireworks really got going Corey was in full SCREAM mode with each BOOM of the fireworks.
We thought that maybe when Daddy returned from the restroom it might be a different story, but alas it was not so. Corey saw Daddy walking to him when an explosion of light filled the sky and Corey did clap and scream yay, but he was also crying and shaking at the same time. I can not describe the look of absolute horror and pleasure that was on his face as he clapped. I also can not tell you if he was clapping for the fire works or that Daddy was there to save the night. My guess is the later of the two.
We walked back to Tante Karen's and tried to watch them from her lawn but that did not last long either. By the time we got home, Master Corey went right to bed, slept thought the night (the first time all week) and did not get up till 9:30 AM. Not only is that really late for him we also started moving some boxes out of the apartment and we were not very quiet.
So until next year the fireworks will have to be watched
from Grandma Mary's windows when there is an Indian Game.
